Another Lawyer in Senzo Meyiwa Case Faces Legal Issues
Despite multiple attempts to sweep his issues under the rug, Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu, representing two accused in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, grapples with the shadows of his own past.
His troubles surfaced when his wife filed a case against him, alleging that he tried to set their house ablaze with her and their children inside back in November 2022.
Mngomezulu is reportedly facing charges including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, contravention of a protection order, and resisting arrest.
Although his wife initially sought to withdraw the case, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) refused. The NPA cited the importance of safeguarding the well-being of the wife and children.
Phindi Mjonondwana from the NPA affirmed, “He was charged with several counts, including contravention of the court order, assault by way of threats, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, as well as resisting an arrest.”
Despite Mngomezulu’s persistent efforts to have the charges dropped, the NPA deemed it crucial to proceed with prosecution.
Mjonondwane explained that the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria delivered a judgment in December 2023. The judgment directed the NPA to consult with Mngomezulu.
The consultation, set for the end of February, will determine whether prosecution continues or proceedings are halted. Meanwhile, the matter remains before the Alexandra Magistrates Court.
This incident is reminiscent of another defense lawyer in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial. Disbarred Advocate Teffo Malesela faced arrest in August 2023 on charges of fraud, assault, malicious damage to property, and trespassing.
Teffo has been in custody since his arrest on August 1, accused of breaking into his own office, assaulting a security officer, and damaging property. He was denied bail.
