Family of Dr. Mbongeni Ngema Set to Pay Tribute to the Late Playwright

The sudden passing of veteran playwright Dr. Mbongeni Ngema shocked both his family and the nation, as he tragically lost his life in a car accident while returning to Durban from a funeral in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape.

Despite this tragedy, his son, Sabelo Ngema, and wife, actress Thandeka MaZulu Ngema, who together form the AfroSoul duo, are determined to carry on his legacy and pay tribute to the late icon.

In honor of Dr. Ngema, AfroSoul will feature in Mbuso Khoza’s Isandlwana Lecture – The Musical at the Joburg Theatre from January 25 to 28, 2024.

During the performance, AfroSoul will pay homage to Dr. Ngema by singing Ihubo from the Ngema family, celebrating his role as a great father who showed immense love and support. Sabelo reflects on his father’s nurturing nature, recalling moments such as when Dr. Ngema paid for his gym membership to support his artistic endeavors.

The tragic news of Dr. Ngema’s passing deeply affected Sabelo, who received the news while en route to Port Shepstone. He recounts the disbelief and emotional impact of the moment.

Thandeka fondly remembers her father-in-law as a disciplined artist and a great teacher, highlighting his dedication to maintaining high standards in the craft.
