Five Lost Their Lives from Deadly Shootout in Joburg
In a tragic incident in Johanessburg, five people lost their lives as a result of a deadly shootout.
The five bodies, believed to be of illegal miners, were found near an abandoned mine shaft close to a slum in the suburb of Riverlea west of Johannesburg.
A preliminary investigation suggests that two rival groups of illegal miners were shooting at each other in the area.
With an unemployment rate of about 32 percent, South Africa counts thousands of illegal miners nicknamed “zama zamas”.
The police force has however opened an investigation to get to the root of the problem.
This, in fact, isn’t the first time there would be random shootings in this area. We can only hope it ends soon.
