Generations, a beloved South African soap opera, began its journey on SABC 1 in 1993. It was the brainchild of Mfundi Vundla and graced our screens every weekday at 20:00 UTC+2 (South African Standard Time) on SABC 1. The plot unfolded in the advertising industry, telling stories of South Africans pursuing their dreams for a brighter tomorrow.

The show received lots of praise and stood its ground as one of the most-watched local TV shows for a considerable time. However, on August 11, 2014, the lights dimmed as production came to a halt. Why? Well, 16 main actors decided to stop filming due to wage disputes, a massive R500 million reduction in royalties, and the unwelcome proposal of signing three-year extended contracts.

After this showdown, from September 30, 2014, to November 30, 2014, the series took a well-publicized break. The 16 actors at the center of the storm were let go on August 18, 2014, following a week-long strike. Fans were encouraged to show solidarity by boycotting the show. But guess what? Instead of decreasing, viewership increased from the usual seven million to a whopping 10 million nightly viewers before the actors were released.

Generations made a comeback on December 1, 2014, with a fresh name, “Generations: The Legacy.” Some familiar faces returned, including Connie Ferguson, Rapulana Seiphemo, Musa Ngema, and Asanda Foji. The revamped show didn’t immediately win over critics and struggled with low ratings in its first week. However, as the weeks went by, viewers warmed up to the changes, giving it a thumbs-up.
