"I Failed My Family" Bontle Modiselle Opens Up About Her Father's Death

Years ago, the dancer’s father, Percy Modiselle, committed suicide in the family’s residential apartment.

Bontle started by narrating how she had seen him with a rope in the middle of the night. However, she did not question him as she didn’t think of what he wanted to do.

“I think I had seen him on his way to do it. My bedroom was closest to the kitchen, and the kitchen lights were on. I woke up, and I went to see what my father was doing, he had stuff with him, he had a rope. But I didn’t think anything of it until the wee hours of the morning, so I’m not going to question him or anything like that. All he kept saying to me was I love you.”

“We woke up in the morning, and it’s strange for my mom not to see her husband beside her. Something was wrong, so my mom was not OK, she felt like something was off; she couldn’t find my dad. We lived in a big house then, and she looked for him everywhere. So there was a part of the house where a passageway, and there was a door that led to that passage, which was accessed from the front to the back of the house.

My mom looked 1st, and as you looked through the keyhole, he was hanging from the tree. She went off. My sister saw it. I saw it had to cut him off the tree because my mom was utterly devastated.”

Since her father passed away, Bontle has always felt guilty about failing her family because she saw the hints that he wanted to commit suicide.

“So the gravity of ‘It’s your fault’ went so deep, so I felt like I failed my family. Because I took my mom’s husband away from her. I took my sister’s father away. I took my father away.”
