Kini Shandu Bashed for Inappropriate Comments About Women
Actor and radio presenter Kininonke “Kini” Shandu faced criticism for expressing controversial views about women who have children outside of marriage.
Shandu, known for his role in ‘Umkhokha,’ received heavy backlash for referring to women with children out of wedlock as “umdlambila” (naughty women).
According to Sunday World, The Sebenza Women Awards’ disciplinary committee announced that Shandu, a co-founder of the awards, would no longer be the face of the awards. This decision was made due to him bringing their name into disrepute.
In an official statement, the committee stated that Shandu is considered a first-time offender. Although he won’t be removed from the executive. Also, he will face disciplinary action and be excluded from participating in the Sebenza Women Awards 2024.
As part of the resolution, Shandu will contribute by purchasing school stationery and sanitary pads for school children.
Additionally, he is required to issue a 30-second apology video. This video will address women, children, men, and other stakeholders affected by his comments.
Following the backlash, Shandu issued an apology on social media, clarifying that his comments were intended as a joke. He emphasized that his statements do not reflect his genuine beliefs and expressed regret for any confusion or disappointment caused. Shandu affirmed his utmost respect for women and commitment to promoting their rights and empowerment.
