The current Mayor to the City of Joburg, Mayor Geoff Makhubo has agreed to answer to the issues raised by the Cooperative Governance MEC Lebogang Maile concerning his government.
He disclosed that he will work on the issues within the next seven days after Maile wrote to the mayor concerning the allegations leveled against the way he is running the city on Monday.
In Maile’s letter to the Mayor, he series of questions including the reason why the budget has not been passed, why the city refused to include provision for Covid-19 deviations in the budget, the irregular appointment of senior managers, and Covid-19 procurement-related corruption.
Makhubo connected MEC’s Maile enquiries to an attempt by the Democratic Alliance (DA) to subvert democratic and legislated processes in the city.
His spokesperson Mlimendlela Ndamase said:
“This includes a deliberate attempt that has been made on a number of occasions to deliberately collapse the Council of Johannesburg and to prevent it from executing its responsibilities as required by the residents of Johannesburg.”
