NOZIBELE MAYABA’S 10-YEAR JOURNEY LIVING WITH HIV Nozibele Mayaba, a prominent HIV/AIDS activist, revealed that she has been living with HIV for a decade.

Initially concealing her status due to prevalent stigma, she disclosed, “I’ve been living positively with HIV for 10 years… Four years ago, I publicly disclosed my status to challenge the unnecessary silence endured for six years, driven by fear of judgment from family, friends, and colleagues.”

Mayaba took a moment to honor those who paved the way for openness about HIV. She recognized the unsung heroes who tirelessly advocated for a world where such disclosures are possible.

In the context of South Africa’s battle against HIV/AIDS, Mayaba highlighted statistics from the Department of Science and Innovation. As of the end of 2022, 7.8 million out of 59 million South Africans were reported to be living with HIV/AIDS.

While this number may seem high, it marks a significant decrease from the previous record. The data shows a decline from 14% to 12.7% between 2017 and 2022.
