Skylene, originally named Kasey Montgomery, was born on December 4, 1948, in Petersburg, Western Virginia, USA, to her parents Skylar and Darlene Montgomery.
She had a tomboyish childhood, and her unique name “Skylene” comes from blending her parents’ names.
She attended Petersburg South High School and then pursued a degree in exercise physiology at Marshall University in Huntington.

However, she later switched her focus to nursing and earned her nursing degree at West Virginia University. She furthered her education by obtaining a master’s degree in nursing from Loyola University in New Orleans.

Skylene started her career as a nursing assistant at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington after completing her nursing degree.
Later, she worked as a nurse in New Orleans at the gastrointestinal ICU at the Ochsner Medical Facility.
In her younger years, she participated in the Miss Teen West Virginia pageant, securing the 2nd place. In 2008, she achieved the title of Miss West Virginia.
