Zahara, the talented and multi-award-winning singer, whose real name is Bulelwa Mkutukana, has passed away at the age of 36.

The Loliwe hitmaker left us on Monday night at a private Johannesburg Hospital, surrounded by her fiancé, Mpho Xaba.

According to a source confirmed by Sunday World, Zahara had been hospitalized for almost three weeks due to liver complications.

The SABC also reported her passing, and Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa expressed his condolences on social media.

In a statement, Kodwa said, “I am very saddened by the passing of Zahara. My deepest condolences to the Mkutukana family and the South African music industry. Zahara and her guitar made an incredible and lasting impact in South African music.”

Born in East London, Eastern Cape, Zahara celebrated her 36th birthday on 9th November this year. Tributes from fans and celebrities have been pouring in, expressing sorrow for the loss of such a remarkable talent.

Podcaster Penuel Mlotshwa reflected on Zahara’s impact, stating, “This album broke records at a time when we were being told that albums are not selling anymore. One of the best music albums to come out of Africa! Ulale ngoxolo sis’ Zahara 🙏🏽❤️ A bittersweet career.”

Athi Geleba, Head of Digital Communications in the Presidency, shared, “‘There is no greater gift you can give or receive than to honor your calling. It’s why you were born.’ Gone too soon.”

Expressing deep sadness, @holymarrymercy tweeted, “I’m deeply saddened by the passing of Zahara, I hope finally she finds peace on the other side. She’s been through a lot, so the only thing is to hope that she’s in a better place🥺🕊. Rest easy angel.”
