As her popularity grows, so does the public’s interest in both her personality and her South African background. In a recent interview on The Cruz Show on Real 92.3, a Los Angeles-based radio program hosted by J Cruz, Jackie Ramirez, Lechero, and Jeff ‘The Sports Dude’ Garcia, Tyla delved into various topics.

During the interview, Tyla discussed the success of her hit song “Water”. She went on to share her dislikes and provided insights into South African slang. When asked for some SA slang, she kept it family-friendly, avoiding inappropriate language.

When jokingly asked for “bad words,” she playfully declined, saying, “No, I can’t say bad words.”

Expressing her preference for South African slang over American slang, Tyla mentioned, “I have my own slang from South Africa.” When asked for the SA equivalent of the US slang term “fire,” she shared South African expressions like ‘yoh!’ and introduced the term ‘bathong,’ conveying disbelief, surprise, or dissatisfaction.

In a delightful exchange, the hosts also learned some SA slang themselves. Tyla was pleasantly surprised when they used words like ‘yebo’ and ‘tekkies’. However, she cautioned them about the word ‘voetsek,’ explaining that it’s a strong expression akin to “F-off.”

Reflecting on her musical journey, Tyla revealed her lifelong desire to create a fusion of African music with Western pop and R&B. She emphasized that this unique blend stems from her upbringing.

Amidst her rising success in the States, Tyla admitted feeling homesick, emphasizing her strong bond with family. Despite the challenges of being away, she acknowledged the support of her loved ones and the necessity of pursuing her musical aspirations.
