Valerie’s roots can be traced back to Queens, New York, where she was raised by her parents, Ralph and Blanch Pettiford. Her journey in the world of performing arts began in 1978 when she graced the stage at the High School of Performing Arts.
Valerie Pettiford’s Remarkable Career:
At the young age of 17 in 1978, Pettiford made her film debut in “The Wiz.” Over the years, she developed her skills as a dancer and choreographer, leaving her mark in Bob Fosse’s Broadway productions.
She received rave reviews from Alvin Klein of The New York Times for her roles in musical revues such as “Ladies and Gentlemen, Jerome Kern!” in 1983 and “West Side Story” in 1987.
In the 1990s, Pettiford ventured into daytime soap operas, appearing in “Another World” and “One Life to Live.” Notably, she played a lesbian character in “The Naked Truth” in 1994 and starred as “Julie” in a touring production of “Show Boat” from 1995 to 1996.
Her performance in the Broadway show “Fosse” from 1998 to 1999 earned her nominations for a Tony Award and a Dora Mavor Moore Award.
After her success in “Fosse,” she took on the role of “Velma Kelly” in “Chicago” in London’s West End from August 1999 to February 2000, alongside Chita Rivera as “Roxie Hart.” In 2001, she played Mariah Carey’s mother in “Glitter.”
