Some users argued that the photo was “inappropriate for a woman her age.”

While some agreed that she should “dress her age,” others defended her, chastising critics for judging women based on their appearance and choices. Mamokgethi Phakeng, the former vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Town, is once again making waves online.

The issue stemmed from a picture she shared showing her exposed belly button. A characteristic move for someone known for stirring up discussions.

In the comment section, she faced criticism for dressing and behaving “inappropriately” for her age. One social media user strongly expressed their opinion, stating, “This is inappropriate for a wife and mother! You are in your mid-40s! Put the tummy and ripped jeans away! Women that dress like teenagers are sad!”

Similar sentiments were echoed by another app user who commented, “Belly button out is inappropriate for a middle-aged woman.”

Unfazed by the talks, Prof Phakeng stood her ground and asserted that she doesn’t care about others’ opinions on her clothing choices. In response to the comments, she wrote, “Who decides what’s appropriate and what’s not?”

Many supported her, encouraging trolls to simply scroll past if they don’t appreciate Phakeng’s liberal and outspoken style.
