Anthony Michael Hall was born on April 14, 1968, in Boston’s West Roxbury neighborhood. His parents were Larry Hall, who owned an auto-body shop, and Mercedes Hall, a blues-jazz singer. His parents separated when he was just six months old.

At the age of three, he and his mother moved to the West Coast, where she found work as a singer. After a year and a half, they returned to the East Coast and settled in New York City, where he grew up.
