The tragic car crash that claimed the life of acclaimed playwright and musician Mbongeni Ngema has led to the opening of a culpable homicide case.

The incident occurred on Wednesday as Ngema, accompanied by two others, was traveling on the R61 towards Port Edward in the Eastern Cape around 4:30 pm. Their vehicle collided with a truck heading in the opposite direction while returning from a funeral in the province.

All three occupants of Ngema’s car sustained severe injuries, and Ngema was urgently taken to the OR and Adelaide Tambo Memorial Hospital in Mbizana. Unfortunately, the hospital pronounced him dead upon arrival. The occupants of the truck emerged unharmed.

Unathi Binqose, spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Transport Department, stated that the circumstances leading to the crash remain unknown. This has prompted the initiation of a culpable homicide investigation at Bizana Saps.

Mbongeni Ngema, known for his influential productions like Sarafina!, left an indelible mark on South African hearts. His musical hits also include Stimela Sase Zola, Woza My-Fohloza, and Safa Saphela Isizwe.

Despite his success, Ngema’s personal life faced challenges, including a 14-year marriage to Sarafina! lead actress Leleti Khumalo, which ended in 2005 amid reports of abuse.

The nation mourned Ngema’s passing, and former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela extended condolences, emphasizing Ngema’s enduring legacy in the world of art.

Prominent figure Advocate Dali Mpofu shared his last encounter with Ngema, expressing disbelief at the sudden loss. He regretted not spending more time if he had known it would be their final meeting.

The nation is grappling with the immeasurable loss of Mbongeni Ngema, a revered talent in South Africa’s artistic landscape.
